How We Rate

Methodology version 1.0.0, frozen 2026-09-22. This methodology was written and frozen before any vendor was scored. Criteria, weights and scoring bands must not be altered after scores are calculated in order to produce a preferred outcome. Any future revision requires a new version number, a visible changelog entry on /how-we-rate/, and re-scoring of every vendor under the new version.

Every vendor is scored against the same 8 criteria, summing to 100 points. Scores are whole numbers: our evidence does not support decimal precision, so we don't display any.

Principles

  • No evidence is scored as zero for that criterion, not as a negative inference about the vendor's conduct.
  • A vendor claim alone never earns full points on a verifiability criterion — only independent confirmation does.
  • Scores are integers; no fractional points are awarded, since the underlying evidence does not support that precision.
  • The same bands and evidence-gathering process are applied identically to every vendor, including LEOLABS.
  • The methodology is published in full on /how-we-rate/ before scores are presented anywhere on the site.

The 8 criteria

Business Transparency 15 pts

Whether the vendor publishes a checkable business identity: a real trading name, a South African contact address or presence, working contact channels, and (if claimed) any business/company registration detail.

Scoring bands for Business Transparency
PointsBand
15Verifiable business name, SA address/presence and registration detail are all published and checkable.
10Business name and contact/presence information are published, but registration detail is a vendor claim only or not published.
5Only minimal contact information (e.g. an email or web form) is published; no address or registration detail.
0No meaningful business identity information is publicly disclosed, or the site could not be accessed to check.

Testing & Documentation Disclosure 15 pts

Whether the vendor publishes any testing-related claims at all — named laboratory, certificate of analysis (COA), batch or report identifiers — regardless of whether those claims can be independently confirmed. This measures disclosure, not truth.

Scoring bands for Testing & Documentation Disclosure
PointsBand
15Named laboratory plus a checkable-format batch/report identifier and a viewable COA are published for reviewed products.
10A named laboratory or COA is referenced, but identifiers are missing or the document is not directly viewable.
5Generic testing claims are made (e.g. ‘lab tested’) with no laboratory name or identifiers.
0No testing or documentation claims are published.

Independent Verifiability of Testing Claims 15 pts

Whether a third party (this review, or any member of the public) can actually attempt to verify the vendor's testing claim independently — e.g. a real, identifiable laboratory that can be looked up, a report ID format consistent with that lab, or a publicly viewable COA file — as distinct from an unverifiable assertion.

Scoring bands for Independent Verifiability of Testing Claims
PointsBand
15Testing claim was independently checked against a real, identifiable laboratory or a directly viewable COA during this review.
8Testing claim references specifics (lab name or ID) that appear plausible but could not be independently confirmed within this review's access constraints.
0No testing claim exists, or the claim is generic/unverifiable (e.g. no lab named, no document provided).

Policy Completeness (Shipping, Refunds, Terms, Privacy) 15 pts

Whether shipping policy, refund/returns policy, terms of service and a privacy policy are each published and specific enough to be meaningful (as opposed to absent or boilerplate placeholder text).

Scoring bands for Policy Completeness (Shipping, Refunds, Terms, Privacy)
PointsBand
15All four policy areas are published with specific, meaningful detail.
10Most (3 of 4) policy areas are published with meaningful detail.
5Only 1-2 policy areas are published, or policies are present but vague/boilerplate.
0No meaningful policy pages are published or accessible.

Research-Use & Regulatory Framing Clarity 10 pts

Whether the vendor clearly frames its products as research-use-only / not for human consumption, avoids implying medical suitability, safety, or regulatory approval, and does not make unsupported medical or legal claims.

Scoring bands for Research-Use & Regulatory Framing Clarity
PointsBand
10Clear, prominent research-use-only / non-medical disclaimer; no unsupported approval, safety or efficacy claims found.
5Some disclaimer language exists but is inconsistent, buried, or the site elsewhere uses marketing language that blurs medical/regulatory lines.
0No research-use disclaimer found, or the vendor makes explicit unsupported medical/regulatory/safety claims.

Public Reputation Signals 15 pts

What independently checkable public reputation evidence exists (e.g. Hellopeter, Google, social/forum mentions), weighted by volume of evidence and by whether the vendor engages with negative feedback — not simply by star rating.

Scoring bands for Public Reputation Signals
PointsBand
15Substantial independent review volume with a generally positive pattern AND visible, active engagement with negative feedback.
10Meaningful independent review volume with a mixed but net-positive pattern, or positive pattern with limited engagement evidence.
5Limited independent review volume, or a genuinely mixed pattern with recurring unresolved negative themes.
0No independently checkable public reputation evidence exists, or available evidence is predominantly negative and unaddressed.

Website & Policy Reliability 10 pts

Whether the website functions reliably, policy pages actually load and are internally consistent, and there is no evidence of deceptive site behaviour (e.g. fake countdown timers, fake stock scarcity, fake review widgets).

Scoring bands for Website & Policy Reliability
PointsBand
10Site and policy pages function reliably and consistently; no deceptive UI patterns observed.
5Site mostly functions but has inconsistencies (broken links, missing pages) or minor deceptive patterns.
0Site is substantially non-functional, inaccessible for review, or exhibits clear deceptive patterns.

Source Accessibility for Independent Review 5 pts

Whether the vendor's public-facing information (policies, claims, contact details) was reasonably accessible to this review's normal, access-control-respecting research process — rewarding vendors who make their claims checkable, without penalising legitimate access controls as if they were misconduct.

Scoring bands for Source Accessibility for Independent Review
PointsBand
5All relevant public pages were reasonably accessible during this review.
2Some relevant pages were inaccessible or intermittently unreachable during this review.
0Most or all relevant public pages were inaccessible during this review, materially limiting what could be checked.
